Lieber Martin 26. 8. 40

Diese Woche trafen Bf. vom 11. IV und 18. IV von dir ein, die 4 Monate unterwegs waren und bereits alles längst überholt ist. Von Stuttgart habe weiter nichts gehört als dass sie die Bürgschaft empfingen, was dir ja im letzten Bf. schon schrieb; dagegen empfingen Julius Kahn ihre Papiere wieder zurück von dorten mit dem Bemerken, dass sie ungenügend seien! Karl hat 4000 Doll. Aggreditiv (=Accreditiv) gestellt und einen Beibürgen mit 100 Mille Doll. ; wie hoch sein Wochenverdienst ist, weiss ich nicht.

Diese Woche fährt ein Herr von der Hapag nach St(uttgart), und hoffen sie zu erfahren, was fehlt. Nach all diesem ist es fraglich, ob sie dieses Jahr noch fortkommen. Sie sind beide sehr aufgeregt, was du jedoch Carl nicht zu sagen brauchst; sie haben ihn ja auch hiervon benachrichtigt.

Dagegen fahren Alfred und Paula Mattes am 21. IX. ab nach U.S.A.; die haben großen Dusel. Stuttgart gibt z. Zt. wenig Visen und wird jedenfalls die Zahl abwarten. Sobald von dorten Weiteres höre, gebe dir Nachricht. Vielleicht sprichst du inzwischen auch mal wieder mi Harry und bereitest ihn vor.

Tante Hans ist heute Mittag wieder abgereist und war 14 Tg.(Tage) hier. Sie hat sich sehr gut erholt. Nach den Feiertagen kommt sie wieder hierher und lässt sich ihre Zähne machen. Frau Kossmann hat von Alice und Gina sowie ihren anderen Geschwistern noch nichts gehört. Nur hört sie von ihrer jüngsten Tochter Hilde, die aber auch nichts von allen hört.

Letzte Woche feierten Hede´s Geburtstag und war es recht gemütlich bei Kaffee von dir und ...?Kuchen?.....Tante Hans erhielt letzte Woche von einer Frau Nachricht, dass Erna verheiratet wäre; ob es wahr ist, bezweifelt sie sehr, weil sie von ihr direct noch kein Wort hierüber erfuhr.

Von deinem Freund Watzi ist jetzt auch ein Onkel von Darmstadt nach U.S.A., der sich schon vor 2 Monaten bei uns verabschiedet hat. Er geht ja auch nach Chicago und wird dich aufsuchen. Else kennt ihn auch. Seine Tochter ist eine Freundin von Else. Grüsse Alle und sei du recht herzl. geküsst von d. Vater.

Dear Martin,

This week we got your letter of April 11 and 18, so after four months, when all the news in them are already old. I have not heard any more from Stuttgart, only that they got the original sponsorship, which I already told you about. But then again, Julius Kahn got back his papers from them, saying that these were insufficient. Karl has spent 4000 dollars for the notary and submitted 100,000 dollars for a sponsorship; I am not sure about his income. This week a man from Hapag will go to Stuttgart and hopefully find out what’s missing. After all this, it is not likely that they get away this year. They are both very upset; but you need not tell about this to Carl. They have already told him. Then again, Alfred and Paula Mattes are leaving for the U.S.A. Sept 21. So lucky! Currently Stuttgart does not issue many visas and definitely by the numbers. As soon as I hear from them, I’ll let you know. Perhaps you can talk to Harry in between to prepare him.

Aunt Hans has just left after a two-week stay. She relaxed here very well. After the holidays she will return and will have her teeth done. Mrs Kossmann has not heard from Alice, Gina, or the other siblings yet. She heard from her youngest daughter Hilde who also knows nothing about the others.

Last week we celebrated Hede’s birthday with coffee from you and cake, which was nice. Aunt Hans heard from a woman last week that Erna got married. She doubts this is true, for she has not heard anything from Erna directly.

An uncle of your friend Watzi from Darmstadt has also left for the U.S.A.; he had said his good-byes two month ago already. He is heading for Chicago and will get in touch with you. Else knows him, too. His daughter is friends with Else. Greetings to all and warm kisses to you from your father.
