Ohne Briefkopf Sonntag, d. 17. III. 40

Lieber Martin

Schon wieder ist eine Woche vergangen ohne Nachricht von dir. Das letzte Lebenszeichen von dir war dein Luftpostbrief vom 5. I. . Ich hoffe, dass du inzwischen Bf. von Golds bekommen hast, die am 3. III. in N. Y. ankamen. Von Selma und Max hatte vor 14 Tagen Nachricht und geht es ihnen gut. Sie werden wohl inzwischen nach U.S.A. abgereist sein. Sie beschwerten sich, weil sie schon zweimal an dich schrieben, aber von dir keine Antwort erhielten. Ich hoffe, dass dich diese Zeilen erreichen und schreibe mir dann mal über „Gina“ und lege Porto bei! Von Holland erhielten jetzt 2 Liebespaketchen, die uns sehr viel Freude machten. Max hat einen Herrn Curt Oppenheimer in Rotterdam , v. Beusingerstr?. 9 (der Schwiegervater von Leop.(old) Werthan hier) damit beauftragt. Max wird es schon mit dir verrechnen.

Dass Onkel Joseph starb, hatte dir im letzten Bf. geschrieben, aber da nicht weiß, ob du ihn bekommen hast, wiederhole (ich) es. Für ihn war es eine Erlösung und Tante Hans ist auch ziemlich getröstet. Sie wäre nur froh, wenn Meta mi den Kindern fortkönnten, und sie würde dann entweder in Karlsruhe oder hier in ein Altersheim gehen.

Heute Mittag wollen wir zu Friedel Schott gehen, der in 14 Tagen auswandern will; er wird dir nach seiner Ankunft schreiben. Betty Freitag und ihr Sohn Karl, den sie in Genua traf, wollten von da nach Chile abreisen und können jetzt nicht weiter, da Chile gesperrt ist; so müssen sie noch weiß wie lange in Genua bleiben.; das ist mehr wie Pech. Onkel Alex u. Tante Hilda warten auch sehnsüchtig auf ihre Papiere. Ich schicke ihnen monatl Mk 50.- zum Leben.

Siegfried Oppenheimer und Frau sowie Familie Moritz Schott werden jetzt auch von England nach U.S.A. abgefahren sein. Wegen den neuen Papieren für uns, werden dir Golds geschrieben haben. Unsere Wohnung, die Golds einst hatten, haben ab 1. IV. an eine Familie Wintersschweig vermietet - auch ältere Leute (Mann und Frau). Hast du von Wetzlers was gehört? Wir hörten nichts mehr von ihnen. Wie geht es Onkel Salomon und Familie Nachmann? Geht Jobs Geschäft weiter gut? Vielleicht kommst jetzt die Luftpost besser an, da die Flugzeuge ab 18. ds. (Monats) die Bermudas nicht mehr berühren und die „Engländer“ nicht mehr säubern können. Grüsse alle Verwandten und Bekannten von mir und sei du herzl geküsst v. d. Vater.

Probiere nochmals einen Luftpostbrief, damit (wir) ein Lebenszeichen von dir bekommen.

Dass wir ohne Nachricht von Dir sind, kommt einem vor, als wenn man gegenseitig nicht mehr existiere; es ist furchtbar in unserem eintönigen Leben, wie einige Zeilen ein Lichtblick (werden). Dear Martin,

Another week has passed without any news from you. The last airmail from you was dated Jan 5. Hope you got a letter from the Golds in the meantime who arrived in NY March 3. I’ve got a letter from Selma and Max 14 days ago; they are doing well. They complained that they had written twice to you, without any response. Hope you get this letter and then write to me via Gina and send her some stamps. We received two care packages from Netherland that made us very happy. Max asked a Mr Curt Oppenheimer in Rotterdam Beusingerstr?.9 (he is the father-in-law of Leopold Werthan) to send the packages. Max will clear the costs with you. I wrote to you in my last letter about Uncle Joseph’s passing, but, since I won’t know whether you received it, I repeat this news. It was a relief for him and so Aunt hans is also better off. She is just waiting for Meta and the children to get away and then she would go to either Karlsruhe or an old folks’ home.

We want to visit Friedel Schott today who is leaving in two weeks. He will write to you once he lands. Betty Freitag and her son met in Genua and from there they wanted to go to Chile but meanwhile Chile is closed, so they are stuck in Genua no one knows how long. That is really terrible. Uncle Alex and Aunt Hilda have also been waiting for their papers forever. I send them 50 marks every month to help with the expenses.

Siegfried Oppenheimer and wife, as well Moritz Schott’s family will have left England now for the U.S.A. The Golds will write you concerning the new papers. The flat where the Golds used to stay is now rented to a family Wintersschweig as of April 1 – an older couple. Have you heard anything from the Wetzlers? We have not heard from them at all. How is Uncle Salomon and the Nachmanns doing?

How is Job’s business going? Perhaps you get better access to airmail now as they are no longer flying via the Bermudas, as of March 18, so the English cannot touch it. Greeting to all and warm kisses from your father.

Try once more the airmail so that we get some sign of life from you. When we get nothing from you, it feels as if neither of us existed anymore. It is terrible how a few lines can brighten the darkness of our monotone life. Thank God, the weather is a bit better at last; we are all healthy; perhaps you heard from the Golds?
