(Brief nach der Reichspogromnacht 1938)

Lieber Martin.

Ich danke für deine prompte Besorgung der Bürgschaft und ebenso danke ich Harry ganz besonders für seine grosse Gefälligkeit, die er mir hierdurch erwiesen hat. Richte ihm meinen Dank aus, da ich seine Adresse nicht habe, kann ihm nicht selbst schreiben. Wir müssen jetzt sehen so rasch wie möglich zur Überbrückung, bis nach U.S.A. können, in ein anderes Land zu kommen, wenn möglich nach Belgien oder nach Frankreich. Jacob schrieb, diese Woche, dass er uns behilflich sein wolle; aber es ist doch schwer, wenn man doch kein Geld mitnehmen kann. Findest du denn jemand, der uns geldlich unterstützen kann? Ich denke doch, wenn nach drüben bin, dass noch was arbeiten und dann meine Schuld wieder abtragen kann. du wirst dir wohl denken können, wie schwer es für mich ist, wenn man 66 Jahre alt ist und sein ganzes Leben viel und schwer gearbeitet hat und jetzt auf die gaben fremder Leute angewiesen sein soll. Hast du über diesen Punkt schon mal mit Max, Sophie und allen Verwandten gesprochen? ich denke, das wir mit Hilfe von Frau Kossmann vielleicht eine kl.(eine) Pension aufmachen können oder hast du sonst was, das wir tun könnten?

Ernst fängt jetzt das gleiche Geschäft, wie es Änne hat, an; wäre so was in Chicago nicht auch möglich? Setze dich mal mit Max Oppenheimer und Ernst hierüber in Verbindung. auch mit Max Herz kannst du mal sprechen und seine Ansicht hören. ich gehe diese Woche nach Ffm zu United Lines, ob die Bürgschaft da ist. Sollte für Frau Kossmann keine Bürgschaft dabei sein, so musst du unbedingt dafür sorgen. Du weisst, dass sie jetzt über 13 Jahre bei mir ist und stellt stet(z)s alles gut besorgt hat und kann man doch die Frau jetzt auch nicht im Elend allein lassen. Tue , was in deiner Macht steht!

Ich hoffe bald wieder gute Nachricht von dir zu erhalten und küsse dich herzlich dein Vater.

Letter one day after the Kristallnacht 1938

Dear Martin,

Thank you for promptly getting the affidavit, and I thank also Harry in particular for his great kindness for doing this for me. Please convey my gratitude to him, since I do not have his address, and so I cannot write to him. We must now, as fast as possible, move to another country temporarily, until we can go to the U.S.A., if possible, to Belgium, or France. Jacob wrote to us this week that he wanted to help us; but it is difficult if we cannot take any money with us. Can you find someone who can support us financially? I believe, once I am over there, I can work and so repay my debt; You can imagine how hard this is when one is 66 years old, has worked long and hard his whole life and now he must live off other people. Have you talked about this with Max, Sophie and other relatives yet? I think we could run a little bed and breakfast with Frau Kossmann, or have you got another idea? Ernst is now starting in the same business as Änne’s; would there be something like that in Chicago for us? Get in touch about this with Max Oppenheimer and Ernst. You could also talk with Herz and hear him out what he thinks. I go to Frankfurt this week to the United Lines to see if the affidavit is there. If there is no affidavit for Frau Kossmann yet, you must immediately take care of it. You know that she has been with me for 13 years now, and took care of everything very well; we cannot leave the woman behind in this trouble. Do everything you can.
