Firmenbriefkopf Nr. 76 Gross-Gerau, den 18. Jan. 1938

Lieber Martin.

Zwischen deinem Briefen Nr. 73 und 74 lagen 14 Tage und nehme ich an, dass die Feiertage schuld waren; wie aus deinen Zeilen entnahm, habt ihr sie schön verbracht. Bei uns vergeht ein Tag wie der andere. Soeben kam vom Spaziergang zurück, Frau K. (ossmann)und ich waren bis am Woogsdam, damit uns das Nachtessen besser schmeckt. Am Sonntag waren in Mainz und war es sehr nett. Und sind um 11 Uhr nach Hause gefahren. Gestern war Frieda Kahn bei uns und haben sich die Gemüter wieder beruhigt. Leop.(old) Kahn ist diese Woche auch hier und machen sie Inventur. Ich glaube, dass sie ihre beiden Häuser bald verkaufen und du brauchst aber bei Carl hiervon nichts zu erwähnen.

Tante Hans war doch bei Vetter Adolph im Haag und hofft dieser, dass sein Bruder Louis der in Philadelphia ist, in Sachen Al(bert) was thun kann. Wenn du bei Elfriede für sein Kind was tun könntest, würde mich sehr freuen.

Nachmanns sind stark auf der Wohnungssuche und werden jedenfalls morgen mieten, eine, die sie gestern ansahen und sehr gefiel. Willi Siegel, der Neffe von Gustav Hirsch hat vorher drinnen gewohnt, der ist auch mit Frau ausgewandert.

Hörst du eigentlich gar nichts mehr von Salli? Anscheinend geht es ihm sehr gut. Er schrieb, dass er jetzt wöchentlich 40 Doll(ar) verdient. Vielleicht finde (ich) für dich auch so was, wenn ich rüber komme, aber ich glaube noch nicht ganz daran. Was ist eigentlich deine Fun(c)ktion im Geschäft? du hast mir bis jetzt sehr wenig über deine geschäftliche Tätigkeit berichtet. Mit Stanleys Grüsse(n) habe mich sehr gefreut und erwi(e)dere dieselben von mir! Grüsse alle Verwandten und Bekannten und sei du recht herzl. gegrüsst von deinem Vater.

Obwohl dein Brief mit grosser Verspätung ankam, freuten uns. Für mich bleibt nichts bes.(onderes) zu erzählen, dass es in Mainz sehr nett war und haben Onkel und Tante wie immer viel Besuch, abends kamen Labori und Frau und spielten Karten. Enkel Siegfried erzählte mir viel interessantes von seinem letzten Wohnort. Die Weihnachtskarte ist fein gemacht; sicher ist die Aufnahme von Dir. Ich wollte, dass dem Vater die Papiere für zu Dir die Orientierungsreise bald bekäme, damit so versch.(iedenes) besorgen könnten. Am 11. Febr. wird Onkel Alex 70 Jahre alt, vergesse nicht zu gratulieren! Berthel hat ihre Papiere (Pass etc.) noch nicht, es geht alles nicht so leicht bei ihr. Recht herzl. Grüsse an Alle Bekannte. Joh. Gestern war bei Westerfeld in Stockstadt; erzählte mir das alles Frau W.(esterfeld), dass ihr Enkelchen schrieb, dass du bei ihr warst und hat sie sich sehr gefreut; soll dich vielmals grüßen von ihr. Ihr Sohn Sieg., dem Kind sein Vater ist jetzt wieder bei Möbel Trier in D(armstadt) auf dem Büro; dort hat (er)gelernt und war 9 Jahre im Geschäft. Seine zweite Tochter hat jetzt auch ihre Bürgschaft und hofft, bald auszuwandern.

No. 76 Gross-Gerau, January 18, 1938

Dear Martin,

There were 14 days between your letters No. 73 and 74 and I can only assume this happened because of the holidays; as I can tell from your lines you had great holidays. Here one day is just like the other. We have just come back from a walk. Frau Kossmann and I went all the way to the Woogsdamm, so as to improve our appetite for supper. We were in Mainz on Sunday and it was very nice. Yesterday Frieda Kahn visited us; the mood is calmer now. Leopold Kahn is also here for this week to do inventory. I believe they will soon sell both of their houses, but do not mention anything about this to Karl.

Tante Hans visited her cousin Adolph in the Hague who hopes that his brother Louis in Philadelphia will be able to do something for Albert. I would be very happy if you could check with Elfriede and do something for his child. The Nachmanns are also looking for a rental apartment; they saw one yesterday that they liked a lot. Willi Siegel, the nephew of Gustav Hirsch lived there earlier, but he and his wife emigrated. Have you heard anything about Salli at all? Apparently he is doing very well. He wrote he was making 40 dollars per week. Perhaps I will find something like that for you as well when I come over but I do not quite believe that yet. What exactly is your role in the shop? You have written very little about your job tasks to me until now. I was very happy about Stanley’s greetings please tell him hello from me as well. Greetings to all and especially to you from your Father.

Dear Martin,

We were very happy about your letter, even if it came so very late. I have nothing special to report, other than that it was great in Mainz, Uncle and Aunt have lots of visitors like always, in the evening Labori and wife came also and we played cards. The grandchild of Siegfried told me interesting things about their last place. The Christmas card looks good; surely it was you who took the photo. I wish Father would get all his papers for his orientation trip to you, so we could organize things. Uncle Alex will be 70 on Feb 11; don’t forget to congratulate him. Berthel does not have her papers (pass, etc.) yet, nothing works easily with her. Greetings to all from Johanna Kossmann.

Yesterday I was with the Westerfelds in Stockstadt; Frau Westerfeld told me that her grandchild wrote that you visited her and she was very happy about that; many greetings from her. Her son Sieg[mund], child of his father, works in the office of Furniture Trier in Darmstadt again; he was trained there and spent 9 years in the business. His second daughter has her sponsorship too and hopes to emigrate soon.
